In order to buy a cochlear implant for her hearing-impaired daughter, Gao Yuexiang takes a desperate risk which results in her being sent to prison. There, she meets Guo Amei, a deaf-mute woman. Knowing sign language, Gao is assigned Mao’s translator and protector. On release, each go their separate ways. Fate, however, reunites the pair and along with fellow ex-inmates, the women attempt to rebuild their lives whilst trying to overcome the stigma of having a criminal record.
