1945, the end of the Pacific War. On an Okinawan island, soldiers Kazuo Yamashita and Seijun Agena are cornered under heavy enemy fire. They flee into the forest and climb to the top of a large banyan tree, the perfect hiding place. With no means of communication, the two men stay there for two years, waiting for reinforcements to arrive. However, what they did not know is that the war had already ended.
